Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! I’m a singer-songwriter from beautiful Adelaide, South Australia, or ‘Radelaide’ as us locals like to call it. Recently, I released my first few original music videos: #ThisWorld #Catch22 #YouNeverDidntKnow
If you haven’t seen the music clips as yet, you can find them on my YouTube Channel.
Today, I thought I’d share with you a little more about the making of, inspiration and backstory behind my track and first music video, This World.
I recently found my way back to music, a long story for another time. But, the short of it is the coronavirus kicked my butt into action. Like many of you, I was made redundant from my full time job of four years as a result of business closures. It was certainly hard to take, I’m not gonna lie! But on the plus side, it enabled me the time to write a tonne of tunes and be even more focused on getting my music out to share with you all.
#ThisWorld wasn’t actually the first music video I had planned to release, but the COVID-19 lockdown pressed a big fat pause button on my initial plans. Nevertheless, my mind kept going back to this song I’d written back in high school, which actually rather sadly, is still relevant today, and apparently now more so than ever! So, it turns out it was probably the perfect song to release at the time.
I had to dust it off a little, and make a few tweaks, but I feel it speaks volumes of how the issues in our world are ever-present and not getting any better. It just seems there’s more chaos, madness, greed, disease and disastrous effects of climate change. And perhaps the recent pandemic is a much-needed wake up call that if we want things to change, something needs to be done, otherwise at this rate, where will we be in another ten years?! Now that’s a scary thought!
But that still left me with the challenge of getting the music video for This World made while isolated in lockdown with just me and my piano. So what other choice was there but to film a selfie video?
It is fitting based on the theme of the song, and I really love the simplistic, un-staged approach. I literally filmed it with my phone, but I wanted it to be grainy, bleak, and black and white to reflect being in quarantine and the harsh reality of it all that we’re all facing on a global scale.
That was then also combined with some poignant sourced footage – guess I couldn’t have you all just staring at my face for the whole clip...oh wait, I ended up doing that too (insert awkward laugh).
So together with some nifty and talented friends, shout out to my #FastbreakFilms team, we brainstormed a few ideas… because in lockdown we couldn’t just go out and shoot our own video as originally planned! And, being that #ThisWorld is about current world issues, we landed on finding existing footage that reflected and emphasised the themes.
I especially love the intro and how we see the scientists all geared up and running towards some biological catastrophe, cut to the door locking and then me in my bedroom; aka, in isolation, in lockdown, for real! Singing about and being reflective of what’s going on in the world outside and the issues that remain pervasive.
I hope the song and video resonates with you, I hope it inspires something, some small change, or even just to remember that in dark times such as these, small acts of kindness can go such a long way.
Thank you so much for reading along and for your support. And, please reach out and share your thoughts on #ThisWorld. I’d love to hear from you!
In the meantime, take care and sparkle bright!
